Homebirth Midwife Boston MA

Khadijah Cisse
Classical Traditional Midwife
I’m Khadijah Cisse with Midwife at Your Doorstep, a classically-trained traditional midwife honored to serve families throughout Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, Newton, Quincy, and the surrounding Massachusetts communities who are seeking a sacred, autonomous birth experience at home. For over two decades, I have walked alongside families through the divine unfolding of birth—honoring the body’s wisdom, protecting your sovereignty, and trusting in the power that already lives within you. Whether you’re planning your first homebirth, navigating a VBAC or VBAMC journey, preparing for breech or twin birth, or seeking support for autonomous birth, my role is not to control or direct, but to walk beside you with knowledge, reverence, and unwavering belief in your power.
Q: What areas of Greater Boston do you serve?
A: I proudly serve families throughout the Boston metropolitan area and surrounding Massachusetts communities, including Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, Newton, Watertown, Arlington, Belmont, Waltham, Quincy, Milton, Dedham, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Needham, Lexington, Concord, Bedford, Burlington, Woburn, Salem, Beverly, Peabody, Marblehead, Gloucester, Newburyport, Braintree, Weymouth, Hingham, and many other greater Boston communities. If you’re not sure whether I serve your specific area, please reach out and we can discuss.
Q: What services do you offer to Boston-area families?
A: At Midwife at Your Doorstep, I offer comprehensive midwifery care for families seeking homebirth in the Boston area, including:
- Homebirth care for families desiring to birth in the intimacy and safety of their own home
- VBAC and VBAMC support for mothers reclaiming their power after cesarean
- Breech birth support for families whose babies are bottom-down or footling
- Twin homebirth care for families expecting multiples
- Freebirth support and consultation (available virtually to families anywhere)
- Traditional postpartum care including home visits, newborn assessment, and maternal recovery support
- Free childbirth preparation classes specific to homebirth
My approach is hands-off unless necessary, honoring the sanctity of your birth process. I am not one to intervene unless truly needed. Birth belongs to you and your family—not to the state, not to any institution. It is sacred. It is yours.
Q: Why do Boston families choose homebirth?
A: Homebirth is not a trend or a risk—it is the return to what is natural, what is sacred, what has always been ours. Families in Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, and throughout Massachusetts choose homebirth because they desire to labor freely, move as their bodies call them to move, and birth without the institutional interventions that so often disrupt the rhythms of labor. They are close to hospital care when a situation steps out of the range of normal.
At home, you are held in the reverence you deserve. You birth in your own space, surrounded by those you love, in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Research consistently shows that for low-risk pregnancies, planned homebirth with a skilled attendant is as safe as hospital birth, with significantly lower rates of intervention.
Many Boston-area hospitals impose policies that restrict movement, require continuous monitoring, limit food and drink, and push interventions according to institutional timelines rather than your body’s natural rhythm. Homebirth offers freedom from these constraints.
Q: Is homebirth legal in Massachusetts?
A: Yes, homebirth is completely legal in Massachusetts. You have the legal right to choose where and how you birth, and who—if anyone—attends your birth. However, Massachusetts recently implemented restrictive midwifery regulations that limit what licensed midwives can legally offer starting in January 2027, potentially including restrictions on VBAC, breech, twin, and other variations of normal birth.
My heart breaks for Boston families impacted by these regulations. While these restrictions affect what licensed midwives can do, it remains your legal right to choose homebirth and to make informed decisions about your care. I encourage all Massachusetts families to educate themselves on their rights, understand the current regulatory landscape, and seek legal counsel if needed to protect their birth choices. For more information, please visit my page on Massachusetts Midwifery Regulations.
Q: Do you support VBAC and VBAMC homebirths in the Boston area?
A: Yes. I trained predominantly with Nancy Wainer, who coined the term “VBAC” in the 1980s and grounded me in the belief that all uteruses deserve opportunity. I am a VBA2C freebirther myself, and I know the weight of reclaiming your power after cesarean. There is potential that VBAC legislation in MA may change come January 2027.
Many Boston-area hospitals impose strict policies that limit VBAC options or require continuous monitoring that restricts your movement and autonomy. If you’re seeking a different path—one where you are trusted, where your body is believed in, where your choices are honored—I am here. Research supports that having a trial of labor after prior cesarean (TOLAC) is a very reasonable and overall safe choice for most women. Your body is yours alone, and it is your right to plan for a homebirth VBAC or VBAMC if you desire to.
I support VBAC and VBAMC mothers in the Boston area through:
- Virtual consultations to help you process past birth experiences and build confidence
- Evidence-based resources on the safety and success of VBAC/VBAMC
- Emotional support to help you remember your own power
- In-home labor and birth support for families in my service area
- Customized birth planning that honors your history and your goals
We’ll carefully discuss your history, health, and risks during your consultations, so you can make a fully informed decision. You will also be prepared with a backup plan, just in case an unexpected complication arises during labor.
Q: Can I have a breech birth at home in Boston?
A: Yes, breech birth can happen safely at home under the right conditions. In the Boston area, most hospitals and providers will schedule an automatic cesarean for breech presentation. But breech does not mean broken. With the right preparation, assessment, and skilled support, many families safely choose vaginal breech birth. I have had the privilege of attending breech births throughout my two decades of practice, including extensive experience in clinics near my home in West Africa where breech births were frequent and honored as normal variations of birth. I am trained in physiological breech birth and work with families in Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, and throughout Massachusetts who meet the criteria for safe vaginal breech delivery. I do not yet know what future Massachusetts regulations will allow.
Q: Do you support twin homebirths in the Boston area?
A: Yes. Twins do not automatically require hospital birth or cesarean section. I have extensive experience with twin births, including from my work in West Africa where twin births were common and respected as within the realm of normal birth. Approximately 50% of vaginally born twins will have one or more twin born breech—and this is normal. With proper assessment, monitoring, and skilled care, many twin pregnancies can be safely supported at home. I work with families in Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, and throughout the greater Boston area who are seeking to birth their twins at home or who desire consultation and support in navigating their options. Twin birth requires specific preparation and thorough assessment, and I am here to walk that path with you. I do not yet know what future regulations will allow.
Q: What is freebirth, and do you offer freebirth support?
A: Freebirth—also called autonomous birth or unassisted birth—is the choice to birth without a medical provider present. It is the reclaiming of birth as a family event, a spiritual passage, a deeply personal experience. While I am based in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire area and serve families throughout Massachusetts including Boston, my freebirth support is available virtually to families anywhere in the United States and beyond. You do not need to be in the Boston area to receive freebirth consultation and support. Freebirth is not for everyone, but for those who feel called to it, I offer:
- Virtual consultations to help you prepare physically, mentally, and spiritually
- Evidence-based education on physiological birth
- Guidance on when to trust the process and when to seek help
- Emotional support throughout your pregnancy and postpartum
- Connection to resources and community
Q: What happens if I need to transfer to the hospital during my homebirth?
A: I develop a comprehensive transfer plan with every family before labor begins. The Boston area has several excellent hospitals nearby, and transfer, when needed, is typically smooth and non-emergent. Most transfers are for comfort measures (like epidural) rather than emergencies.
If a transfer becomes necessary, I will accompany you and advocate for your wishes. We will have already discussed your preferences and backup plans during prenatal visits, so you’ll know what to expect. I will help you navigate any concerns or decisions you may have to make during the transfer and ensure that you are fully informed and prepared for whatever happens.
I highly encourage having legal representation reserved prior to birth if you plan to decline routine procedures in the hospital such as IV antibiotics, vitamin K for newborn, and the Newborn Screening, as some providers will not respect your choices. While this is rare, it is prudent to have a plan to protect your family. I also strongly encourage meeting a supportive pediatrician, DO, or family doctor that could advocate for release of your healthy baby should you find yourself in a situation of that nature.
Q: What is your philosophy and approach to birth?
A: At the heart of my practice at Midwife at Your Doorstep is a deep respect for families and their choices. I believe that every birthing parent is the true decision-maker. My role is to walk alongside you, offering support, knowledge, and wisdom while honoring your autonomy and the sacredness of your birth experience.
I trust deeply in the innate wisdom of the body and its power to bring life into the world. I work with families who feel the call to trust in the spiritual and physical power of birth and the divine wisdom that guides us as we journey through the unknowns of the path meant for each of us to experience.
In my practice, I am as hands-off as possible, honoring the sanctity of the birth process. I am not one to intervene unless necessary, and I firmly oppose any regulation over a woman’s body or birth choices. Birth is not for the state, the institution, or anyone but the family. It is sacred. It is theirs.
I have two stellar doula assistants who accompany me to most births to love on you if you desire that, and keep me rested for you. You will receive the space and intimacy you need to unfold.
“The most important thing a woman needs during labor is not a set of medical tools and interventions, but the presence of someone who believes in her.”
– Khadijah Cisse, Midwife
